February 25, 2018- For the first time since 2014, the Anaheim Ice Kings are heading to Las Vegas for the Las Vegas Hockey Classic! The Kings took home the Las Vegas Hockey Classic Championship in their first 3 years of competition, dating back to 2005. Since going 12-0 the Kings have struggled, putting up a 5-13-1 record.
The Las Vegas Hockey Classic now has a new home. All the Kings games will be played at the new City National Arena in Downtown Summerlin, just a block east of the Red Rock Casino. City National Arena is the training home of the NHL's Vegas Golden Knights. Located 15 miles west of downtown Las Vegas, the facility features two NHL-sized ice sheets for the players and the Mackenzie River Pizza Pub and Grill for the fans and after games beverages.
The Kings will begin action with a double header on Friday March 2nd. Their first game they will face their Southern California rivals, the Los Angeles Borrachos. The Borrachos, led by their captain and former King Darren Chavez, won the championship last season. A week before the tournament, the Kings were dropped by the Borrachos 4-2 at the So-Cal Challenge. The Kings are looking to halt the Borrachos hot streak and get themselves off to a good start, as game 1 begins at 10:15AM.
For those that are interested, the Vegas Golden Knights will be practicing in Rink A from 10:30AM to 12:30PM, so following the Kings game you can sneak peak at the NHL leading Vegas Golden Knights.
Friday evening the Kings will face the Compton Canucks in their second game of the evening. This game will be crucial as the result of this game could be the make it or break it for a shot at the championship. If the Kings sweep Friday's double header, they are guaranteed to play in the championship.
The final game of the three game tournament will wrap the round robin action, with the Kings playing the Bay Area Icemen. The game will be Saturday March 3rd at 3:30PM.
If the Kings split the first two games, or are able to pull off the top two spots in the standings through the three games, they will play in the championship game on Sunday morning at 10:30AM.
