Kings fall below .500 as they drop their last two games in a row

August 3, 2005- The Kings have had trouble scoring as of late. As a result, they have dropped the last two games in a row and have fallen to third in the standings. In both losses, the Kings lost by just 1 goal, including being shutout against the Walrum.

Costello, the youngestRight - Captain Paul Costello made an inspirational speech at the end of the second period. His speech sparked the Kings to score and make the game within one, however was not able to tie the game. - The Kings had to be feeling good about themsleves after the first game of the season. After netting in 7 goals for a 7-4 victory and their new players skating well, it seemed as if the Kings were going to eaisly take the division, or at least the top two spots easily. However, the lights were out in the goal department against The Walrum, skidding by the Kings 1-0. The Kings were hoping to turn things around against the Ice Breakers, whom yet were to net a goal themselves for the first two games of the season. But its an Ice Breakers team that in the past, gives the Kings troubles.

The Kings recieved some bad news before the game as their goaltender Marty Hoesli would be sat with back spams. In net is a reliable back-up goaltender, and Kings regular defenceman Mike Witmer. Witmer has been in net 8 times for the Kings, posting a 4-4 record. But the unfamiliarity of the crease caused Witmer and the Kings the first goal in the opening drive. 12 seconds into the game, Chris Collins slid the puck towards the Kings net, which found the bottom right corner post then bounced in. It was the Ice Breakers 1st goal in their third game this season. The fans were barley settling into their seats and the Kings were down 1-0. However the Kings responded and responded quickly. Shorthanded, Henry Maixner kicked it in high gear. He put in his second goal and team high 4th point 2 minutes in, and the game was tied at 1. Witmer was now in a groove, and was able to come up with 10 saves in the first. However the Ice Breakers were able to regain the lead before the close of the 1st period. On the powerplay, Dan Stone took a shot that deflected off of a Kings defenseman and went high, going over Witmer. At the end of 1, the Ice Breakers score their first 2 goals of the season and have a 2-1 lead.

The Kings needed to jump start their offense, whom only seen 1 goal in their last 4 periods. However the second period ended up becoming a nightmare for the Kings. They produced only 3 shots in the 2nd, and watched the Ice Breakers come into their face--the style of play that the Kings are known to play. As soon as one of the Kings had the puck, an Ice Breaker was right there. This created very limited number of scoring chances by the Kings. In the closing minute of the second period, Howard Feldner took advantage of a Kings turnover in their own zone, and stepped around Witmer for the Ice Breakers third goal of the game. Immediatly, the Kings called a timeout, in which they heard a mouthful from captain Paul Costello. The talk was loud and to the point, but something must of sparked the team. 8 seconds and the drive after the speech, Mike Goodey drove to the net and put the puck high on a slightly bad angle that found its way in. It was Goodey's second goal of the season, in which he is tied with three other players for the team goal lead. Going into the third, the Kings were down only by 1 with a 3-2 score.

The poweroutage by the Kings have now seem them score only 2 goals in their last 5 periods. They were looking at their play at the conclusion of the second to get them on the board in the third. They also needed some help from back-up goaltender Mike Witmer, who has made 16 saves on 18 shots. Witmer shinned in the third period, making a couple of outstanding glove saves. With two minutes to go in the game, the Kings were caught with a penalty after an altercation. Witmer, unfamiliar with the crease violations of the goalies, since hes a defenseman, left the crease. It is a 2:00 minor penalty for leaving the crease after an altercation, even if the goaltender is not apart of the altercation. So if the Kings were going to tie the game up, it would have to come shorthanded. The Kings did put some pressure on, and with 30 seconds left the game pulled the goaltender. However they were unable to score, and came a goal short for the second game in a row. Being outshot 22-15, the Kings dropped their second game in a row. In two games, they put up only 2 goals, and allowed only 4.
