THE DEVIL WITHIN THEM
DD's slam Kings in playoffs

April 8, 2009- The Devil Dogs made sure the Kings had no bite against them, scoring 11 goals in a route that put the Kings out of any championship game contention. Fed by 1 or possibly 2 illegal players on the Devil Dogs bench, the league proceeded the playoff game which ended the season series where as overskilled players were just not on the same level as the Kings.

The dreams of the Kings pulling a major upset in the 2009 playoffs came to a halt just 10 minutes into their second game against the Devil Dogs. Paul Rohrer scored a natural, pure hat trick in a solo effort (no assists given) in the first period of the game. Unlike the first game, the referees were not going to let this game out of hand, calling 11 penalties for 22 minutes in the opening 14 minutes. However nether team was able to score on any of their man advantages, but the Devil Dogs took a commanding 3-0 lead to the second period.

It didn't get much better in the second period for the Kings, as they would go down 5-0 before they would respond with a goal of their own. Mike Goodey finally got on the board with a breakaway goal, followed with his second goal of the playoffs 6 minutes later. But 4 goals by the Devil Dogs in the second period kept their lead at 5, going into the third period with a 7-2 lead.

Dave Young and Dan Coleman each talled a goal, while Mike Goodey capped off his hat trick for the Kings highlights in the third period. But another 4 goals from the Devil Dogs made it no contest, as they dropped the Kings 11-5 to eliminate the Kings from a birth to the championship game. Paul Rohrer finished with a 7 point night--thats 5 goals and 2 assists. Ironically, in 11 games during the regular season, Rohrer had only 3 goals and 4 assists for 7 points.

Several questions still remain unanswered as the Kings offically played the game under protest. Devil Dogs Garth Dokken, after being assest 5 penalties for a total of 37:00 minutes in their last match-up between the two teams, was slapped with a 3 game suspension. Dokken did participate in what was his third game of his suspension, which is the backing of the Kings protest. The league is investigating but have not made a final decision on the matter. Whether or not Dokken should have been on the ice, it still doubtful that Rohrer was in the 88 jersey. Not only did he total his regular season point production in 1 playoff game with a dominating performance with 5 goals and 7 points, photography from previous games proves another player was in that #88 jersey last game. Whether it was an illegal player or not, the Kings battled for the full 42 minutes, managing 5 goals against a quick, speedy and talented Devil Dogs team. The Kings might have not won this game, won the series or flat out been competitive in any of the games against the Devil Dogs. With a team that at many times showed no class against their teammates, their opponents or the league itself, one thing is for sure--the Kings can leave the ice with dignity knowing that they have full respect for the game.
