Kings pick up their first win of the postseason

March 26, 2008- After being shutout the week before, the Kings rebound and take out the Red Dogs to even their record at 1-1 in the 2008 playoffs. The top 2 teams in the round robin tournament will face each other in the chamionship game on April 20th. With the win, the Kings remain in the hunt for the championship.


Right: Kings right winger Scott Delong has been playing on a hot streak as of late, scoring a Hat Trick against the Red Dogs in the 2008 playoffs - Even though it has been only 1 game, the Kings face must win games from here and the remainder of the playoffs, following their 3-0 loss against Shock and Awe. They had their chance to redeem theirselves against the worst team in the divison, the Red Dogs.

After falling behind and never getting into it from their first game, the Kings struck first when Kevin Costello finished off a beautiful passing play by Kevin Costello for the Kings first goal of the postseason. A tic tac score passing play that started with Paul Costello, off to Mike Goodey and finished off with a tap in by the younger Costello, who looked up in the air and celebrated for the Kings 1-0 lead. In the closing minutes of the first, the Kings made it 2-0 when Dave Young's simple dump in deflected off a Red Dog to Stefano Palazzolo, who then shot it on net. After the initial save the rebound popped to Mike Brewster, who tapped home on a virtually empty net. The Kings would end the first period on a high note, with a 2 goal lead.

Stacy Delong got the Red Dogs on the board when he put the puck low on net, sliding past a standing Lennie Lopez to cut the Kings lead in half at 2-1. The goal was answered 35 seconds later with a nice Slap Shot by Scott Delong, regaining the Kings 2 goal lead. After Justin Goodey was called off for a Hooking penalty, the Red Dogs took advantage of their chance when Ramon Cook finished off a passing play from Stacy Delong, and the Red Dogs creeped back within one once again at 3-2. However 2 goals 14 seconds apart before the period would end would give the Kings a big boost and some breathing room on the Red Dogs. First Donny Dymond got on the board when his wrist shot went perfectly over the Red Dogs goalkeepers glove and into the corner of the net. Then a fortune bounce finally went the Kings way in this years playoffs. Skating from behind the net, alongside the boards towards the blueline in the Red Dogs zone, Delong simply threw the puck towards the front of the yet. The puck hit off a couple of Red Dogs defenseman in front and into the net for a demanding 3 goal lead for the Kings.

The Kings put the game out of reach with two more goals in the third. Dave Young picked up his first of the playoffs when redirecting a pass from K. Costello. Scott Delong added his third goal for the hat trick after staying planted infront of the crease, and one timing a nice pass from Dan Coleman from behind the net. The Kings would end with 7 tallies after being shutout the week before, with a 7-2 Final in Week 2 of the playoffs.

As the Kings wrapped their game up in the Olympic Rink, in the NHL Rink an upset as the first seeded Shock and Awe, who shut out the Kings 3-0 the week before, where defeated by Short Handed 7-5. The win by Short Handed makes them 2-0, while Shock and Awe fall to 1-1 with the Kings. With that, the Kings must win their final two games of the season if they are planning on going to the championship game April 20th.

GAME NOTES: The Kings were without left winger Marc McGinnis, after suffering a concusison during the Shock and Awe game. McGinnis' x-rays did come out negative, however rest kept him out of the line-up for this game. McGinnis should be good to go against the Nordiques...
