February 1, 2017- Its the longest rivalry the Kings have at Anaheim Ice. The Flames, who practically have been there every season since the inception of Disney Ice, and the only adult hockey team who has been around longer than the Kings, will try to prevent the Kings from advancing. In that attempt to bounce the Kings, they are trying to keep their championship game chances alive with a win of their own. With a 0-1-1 record, they still have a chance at the championship game if they were to win their last two games in regulation.
Its only fitting that the Kings would need to face the old rivals if they were to advance to the championship game. Although the Flames have also been an icon at Anaheim Ice, the two didn't start playing each other until the Spring of 2003. In their first match-up, the Flames defeated the Kings 7-2 with Aaron Kovall putting in 2 goals for the Flames. The first time the two teams faced each other in the playoffs was March of 2004, when again Kovall dominated the Kings with a hat trick, edging the Kings 4-3. The Kings will continue to have to contain Kovall to be successful today.
